This meant that the delegates of France, Spain, England, Sweden, and the Republic had concluded peace -- a peace which ended the War of the Spanish Succession and which at the same time ended the political role of the great Republic. After having been one of the leading powers of Europe for more than a century, the Republic voluntarily retired from active life among the great nations. Her armies were disbanded. Her fleet was allowed to rot away in the harbors. Her generals and admirals were pensioned off and sent home to tend their vegetable gardens. Their places were taken by diplomats, long-wigged and well provided with money. This money was to serve to buy peace. Peace at any cost, even at the cost of dishonor, was to be the new creed of the Republic. It is true the old prosperity remained, and for many decades to come commerce and industry were to be quite profitable. But it seems that the"men" had died out.
